I provide three levels of service for authors seeking manuscript editing.

Budget

Who should use this service? Anyone with limited funding for editing who has a reasonable grasp of English. Authors with English as their first language who know they write well and just want to ensure no basic errors remain in their text.

What is included in this service? I will correct spelling, punctuation and grammar, and ensure consistent style and presentation, following appropriate scientific conventions. I will make simple changes to improve wording or clarity. I will draw to your attention any sentences that need more extensive rewriting, and I will comment on structural problems and areas where the text could be shortened. I will draw to your attention any problems with references, tables and figures.

What is not included in this service? I will not rewrite sentences that are grammatically correct but poorly expressed. I will not make changes to the structure of the text, or shorten it. I will not make changes to table design or figures. I will not check totals in tables or other calculations, and I will not verify any references, accession numbers, EC numbers, or similar data.

Pricing. A$0.05 per word (approximately US$0.04, €0.03, ¥4.78 per word), 30% surcharge for express turnaround.

Standard

Who should use this service? Anyone with a well-structured document. If you are an author with English as a second language, you are probably looking for this service.

What is included in this service? I will correct spelling, punctuation and grammar, and ensure consistent style and presentation, following appropriate scientific conventions. I will rewrite sentences to clarify the meaning or improve the expression. I will check totals in tables and other calculations. I will verify references, accession numbers, EC numbers, and similar data if I can do so from my computer, and I will draw your attention to any I was not able to verify in this way. I will do limited shortening of the text. I will make minor structural changes and simple changes to table design, and comment on any more extensive changes that may be needed. I will comment on changes needed in figures.

What is not included in this service? I will not make major structural changes or undertake major shortening of the text. I will not make changes to figures.

Pricing. A$0.10 per word (approximately US$0.08, €0.06, ¥9.57 per word), 50% surcharge for express turnaround.

Comprehensive

Who should use this service? Anyone who wants all aspects of their document checked and corrected, or who needs more than the standard service.

What is included in this service? The specific work included will be negotiated with you after I have seen your document. It may include structural changes and shortening, even full re-organisation and rewriting. Other services, such as preparing figures or submitting the document to your selected journal, can also be included.

Budget and Standard service generally involve me doing the work and returning the edited manuscript to you with comments drawing your attention to things that need further work. In contrast, when you choose the Comprehensive service I will work with you to prepare the best possible document within the negotiated service. This means I will communicate with you as needed to resolve any queries before I return the edited document. Ideally, you should not need to do anything more to your document after this edit.

What is not included in this service? The specific work included will be negotiated with you after I have seen your document. I will not do anything you specifically ask me not to do. If during the editing process I find something that was not considered in the negotiation, I will contact you to resolve how I should deal with it.

Pricing. As the service is customised to your needs, it is not possible to give standard rates per word. Request a quote.

Turnaround times

The turnaround time is how long it will be before you receive the edited document. Turnaround times are calculated from when I notify you that I have agreed to the job.

For Budget and Standard service, you can choose normal turnaround or express turnaround. There is a surcharge for express turnaround (30% for Budget, 50% for Standard).

Document types

I can edit whatever type of document you are producing:

File types

I can work with all major file types. My computer runs Windows XP, and I usually work in Microsoft Word 2000. I can work in WordPerfect or Openoffice.org if you prefer.

I also have considerable experience with L^AT_EX.

For figures I can work with most formats. If I create figures for you, they will normally be publication quality EPS or TIFF format.
